I have always been a light sleeper, taking ages to fall asleep and when I do, easily woken by pretty much anything and that hasn’t changed much as I have got older. I went for tests around 2 years ago now to see if I was suffering from a type of sleep disorder called sleep apnoea and luckily I’m not but we never got down to the bottom of my sleep problems other than possible allergies. Over the last 6 months or so and after falling pregnant with our 2nd child, I have found it a lot easier to actually fall asleep but I wake most mornings not feeling like I have been asleep very long so when I saw that ResMed were looking for testers of their S+ sleep monitor, I was really interested in what it would pick up about my sleep habits and if it could really help me Sleep Better, Sleep Well.
Back in 1981, the first continuous positive airway pressure device was developed as a non-invasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea. In 1989, ResMed was founded to commercialise this device and since then, as the dangers of sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea has increased, ResMed has introduced lighter, quieter and more comfortable equipment to help improve sleep and lives of sufferers (and partners!) better! The latest version is now the S+ device.
The S+ is a stylish unit that sits on your bedside table, quietly monitoring your sleep patterns every night while you lay in bed. It works by detecting the movement of your upper body (expansion and relaxation of your chest) while you sleep and breathe in and out. It also picks up your overall body movements such as positional changes, arm twitches and shrugs. The S+ measures movements using ultra low power radio waves and is very similar to the echo location system used by bats to hunt insects. As you move, the phase of the echo changes and is converted into a signal which reflects your movements. There is no need for any mattress strips or wristbands needed so you can be assured that your sleep will not be interrupted by the monitor itself and therefore the results are more accurate.
As well as monitoring your sleep and identifying any sleep issues, the S+ has some really great features! Once set up, the monitor relaxes you to sleep with soothing sounds synchronised to your pre sleep breathing, helps create the ideal sleep environment and you can even use the text and vocal tools to record tomorrows to-do’s clearing your mind and once you have fallen asleep, it can gently wake you at the optimum time so you feel refreshed and ready for the day.
The S+ is really easy to set up, simply plug in the unit and face it towards where your chest is when laying on the bed and download the free accompanying app. The app asks you to input information about yourself and your sleeping habits to get an accurate picture of what you need from the monitor. The S+ connects to your smartphone or device using Bluetooth and once you are ready to go to sleep, simply press ‘Sleep’, it will ask you to answer some questions about your day (very quick and easy!) and that’s it!
In the morning, you get personalised feedback from the app detailing how good your sleep was that night, your total sleep time, time awake, REM sleep, Light sleep and Deep sleep. This information gives you great detail into how you slept and tips on how to improve your sleep the next night or how to improve sleep conditions in your bedroom if needed. The colourful graphs are really easy to read and use so you can see visual information if you prefer.
We have both really enjoyed using the S+ by ResMed! It has been really interesting over the past 2 weeks to see just how well I sleep and to understand my results. My results have shown that I do not deeply sleep a lot at all during the average night and this backs up the understanding why I wake easily and why I struggle to wake up feeling refreshed and like I have slept ‘well’. The S+ is a really stylish unit that looks really good on the bedside table. It comes with 2 ports to charge the unit and your device at the same time which is really useful when you are short on plug sockets and really well thought out! You can remove the pod from the frame to use while travelling away from home so you don’t need to worry about missing out on sleep monitoring or fitting the unit into a bag. The monitor and app are very easy to use and have, as far as I’m concerned, been very accurate in their findings. We will definitely be continuing use of the monitor in an effort to do all we can to Sleep Better, Sleep Well!
